Everyone on your team, including you will have personal issues from time to time. Some will be minor like a child with chicken pox, some major like a divorce. Grant support what you can without setting a precedent, but always try to be kind.
On the other hand, never start something you can’t stop without hurting people.
A typical example is throwing a birthday party for someone in the office. Easy to do when there are only twenty of you in the company; impossible when there are more than a hundred.
Never, ever, lose sight of your family. They are the only lasting relationship you will have when all is said and done. Others will replace you as CEO, but your family will always be your family. Don’t let your ego and drive overwhelm that fact. Members of the board, your investors, your associates will not be at your deathbed. In fact, they won’t remember who you are. Some may recognize your photo on the obit page.
