Need some coffee? Get off your butt and get it yourself. Never ever ask a women to get you coffee anymore than you would ask a man. Never ask an employee to do a personal errand for you. You can walk to your bank by yourself.
Aways promote from within. Every employee has a possible career path in front of them. No one responds well to dead-end jobs. If they do either remove them or the job. The mailroom clerk should have a chance to move up.
Annual reviews are a time waster designed by the HR department. If the only time you or your managers speak to the staff about their performance is once a year, then you are running a mushroom farm where the employees are kept in the dark and are covered in manure. Don’t expect superior performances from them. They don’t have time to be superior because the good one s are out looking for a new job. You should be doing the same because your company is going to fail.
Annual reviews grew out of giving annual raises. The two have nothing to do with each other. Employees should always know where they stand on performance. An annual across the board raise based on company results and inflation is simply the base case to be fair to your employees. If an employee doesn’t deserve an annual increase then what are they doing there?
If your corporate structure allows it–even if it doesn’t– find a way to give every employee a stake in the firm. However small in the overall scheme, employees love being owners and it will help maintain your inventory of paper pads and pencils whn the school year starts.
