You the CEO have everyone to talk to, but no one to confide in. Unless your spouse has the patience to understand your business, you and you alone are the decision maker. Not only do you not have anyone to confide in, you also don’t have anyone to tell you the unvarnished truth, especially if they question your judgement.
Successful enterprises are not run by committee. Consensus is preferable to be sure, but you have to make the final call. That’s why the board is paying you the big bucks.
Your buddies from accounting, where you first started, aren’t your buddies anymore. They are your employees, first and foremost. They may give you their opinions, watch out for the bias that they will certainly have.
You must be comfortable making a decision. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake.
Don’t shoot form the hip or the lip.
If you do make a mistake, rectify it immediately. Before making a tough decision walk around your desk twice. Examine all the angles and always think through what the decision will mean to your staff
Never apologize, never explain.
If you do, your employees will think that you have either changed your mind or that you feel badly about what you have done. In both cases you will look weak and indecisive
You are not the CEO because you are the most popular person in the company. You are the CEO because the board, the employees and the shareholders expect that you will make the company successful.
