You’ve made it. You worked hard, you played the game, you said, “yes, I can,” you made a positive contribution, you got lucky, your predecessor retired, a search firm placed you, you raised capital to start your dream.

Whatever the path you took, you are now the person in charge, the boss, the big kahuna. The celebration the conference room is underway, and when the champagne bottles are empty, the balloons have floated to the ceiling, the last director shakes your hand as she leaves the boardroom, you close the door. You ease into the chair at the head of the long conference table and think, gosh, does this feel good or what?

You put your hands behind your head and lean back, wondering where to start. But now you are the boss. That’s where the real challenge begins.
